Caldwell Zoo Nestled on 85 acres in the piney woods of east Texas, the Caldwell Zoo showcases multi-species exhibits featuring animals from North and South America and Africa. The zoo houses over 2,000 animals representing 250 species. Visitors can enjoy a snack at the Chakula Café while looking out over a recreation of an African savannah with giraffe, elephant, kudu, Grevy zebra, wildebeest and warthog roaming freely, or stop by the Wild Bird Walkabout to feed an aviary full of parakeets and cockatiels, or even check out the antics of a group of black-footed penguins. The Caldwell Zoo is definitely a “natural for family fun”.
Ellen Trout Zoo Ellen Trout Zoo and Park is fully-accredited and shows a wide variety of animals and birds. The zoo is known for it breeding programs and hosts family-oriented special events throughout the year. The Zoo houses close to 700 reptiles, birds and mammals from around the world. Currently, the zoo is undergoing the largest expansion project since it opened in 1967. Maasai Giraffe and White Rhinoceros exhibits opened in the summer of 1999. A Nile Hippopotamus exhibit featuring under and above water viewing opened in 2002.
