The 18 acre zoo is home to 1700 animals, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish and invertebrates. The zoo houses the animals in several natural habitat exhibits including the South American Pavilion, Americas Aviary, Birds of Prey, Forest Atrium, Asian Grasslands, Asian Endangered Walk and Elephant Complex.  The Asia section is home to elephants, tigers, orangutans and a baby Siamang. The Americas Aviary contains a walkway for visitors as well as a waterfall, flowers and plants. The "World of the Sea Lion" encounter takes place daily at 10:45 & 2:45, the Elephant Encounter is at noon. Construction is underway on the Zoo's Reptile House and upcoming "Passport to Africa" savannah exhibit opening in phases through 2010, and will include lions, zebras, giraffes, Meerkat, a train, a zoo gift shop, a new restaurant and two education buildings, thus expanding the zoo to 36 acres.

Maxey Park & Zoo displays a variety of exotic animals such as monkeys and zebras. There is a Kid’s City Playground and botanical garden. A child size replica of the Alamo, sand volleyball,
basketball court, picnicking facilities and a gazebo. Free Admission. Open 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. There is also a miniature golf course (small fee).
