The Abilene Zoo has long been one of Texas' great treasures. It all began modestly in 1919, when the original zoo was built in Fair Park now named Oscar Rose Park. The City fathers purchased land there in 1914 for the West Texas Fair and it became Abilene’s first municipal park. Today, the Zoo has grown to include more than 500 animals representing over 200 species, many on the endangered list. The Zoo itself has become one of the state's significant educational and conservation resources. The Abilene Zoo is a Division of the City of Abilene from which it receives its annual operations budget and supporting donations are acquired through the Abilene Zoological Society and the Grover Nelson Zoological Foundation.
